What a life! It twitters and rustles everywhere; the birds bravely gather round the feeding stations and share the grain that the animal friends on the Land of Peace have put out for them, also with the squirrels... For winter is a very hard time for all the animals. Searching for food, the cold, frozen watering places – some of them survive the winter only with great difficulty. And so, they're all the more happy when people help them, giving them something to eat and drink. A whole lot of birds have meanwhile settled into a small woods on the Land of Peace; it's called the "Bird Paradise." Some of these birds would like to introduce themselves to you...

As a spotted woodpecker I belong to the so-called resident birds, that is, to the bird species that winter here in Europe. In summer, I find my food myself under the bark of the trees. In winter, I'm happy about the food that the people bring to us in the feeding stations ...

As a song thrush I belong to the most talented singers. If you want to hear by song among the many others: I repeat each verse two-three times. I return quite early from my winter migration. That's why I'm happy about the gifts people leave in the feeding stations...

People easily recognize me by my orange-red breast. That's where I get my name: robin redbreast (European robin). I'm also very, very musical. My repertoire includes 275 song-motives, which change constantly. Already as young birds, we redbreasts can imitate the voices of other birds.

Do you know where I, the chaffinch, got my name? When danger looms, I sound alarm with a sharp "finch" - "finch." With a monotone "trüüb," (meaning gloomy in German), the "rain call," as people call my song, I predict the weather...

We blackbirds spend a lot of time caring for our feathers. We put them in order and oil them. We also love to bathe. That's why we rejoice when people maintain watering places in the garden. When it's very cold, we really fluff up our feathers – that warms us right up.

Of the over 40 bird species that romp about in the bird paradise on the Land of Peace, I, the great titmouse, am the best known and most frequent representative. I am particularly happy about the many nesting boxes that have been hung up. Decorated with moss, lichens, stems and roots, they give us a wonderful place to live and breed.
Prof. Peter Berthold, well-know ornithologist and until 2004 Director of Ornithological Station Radolfzell, advises that birds be fed not only in winter, but all year long. Living conditions have become very difficult for our feathered friends due to us human beings who have taken away their basis for suitable habitats. Do you also want to help? If you have a garden or balconey, set out suet balls and a roofed feeding station with mixed grains along with hanging up nesting boxes. Not only the birds, but also many a squirrel will gladly help themselves. And the feathered visitors are also happy to have watering places. Be sure to keep them free of ice in harsh winters, so that the animals have easy access to fresh water.
