Building Instructions for a Large Feeding Station

The easily built large bird feeding station consists of 3 main components:

    -Feed Cylinder
    -Roof
    -Base Plate

The feed cylinder is the supply container into which the feed is put. It is large enough that you can wait several days before refilling, depending on how many birds fetch their food here.  This has the advantage that in winter you can leave the feeding station unobserved for several days, without having to worry that the food will soon be gone.
The roof is large enough that the feed that trickles out of the feed cylinder onto the underlying base plate does not get wet when it rains.

The feeding station has the following measurements:

Height = 75 cm
Diameter 1 =120 cm
Diameter 2 = 30 cm

Material needed:

  Pos:
  01      1    x    Sewer pipe=30cm x 78 cm long,

  02      1    x    Sewer pipe=30cm x 8cm long, sawed through with 1 cut

03      1    x    End piece of sewer pipe =30 cm as cover

04    12   x    Pieces of waterproof wood, sawed into trapezoids.
Width bottom: 31,5 cm, length: 62 cm,  width top: 7,8 cm

05      1    x   Ring for roof elements: outer dimension=116 cm.
Inner dimension=104 cm, 0,8 cm thick

06    12  x     Roof battens, 58 cm long, with 45° angle on both ends

 07      1    x   Waterproof base plate and/or painted. Diameter=120 cm, 1,5 cm thick

08      6    x   Roof battens 60 cm long for 6-cornered edge for base plate, so that food does not fall on ground

09      3    x   Metal brackets to fasten feed cylinder to base plate

10      1    x   Tarpaper to cover roof, if wished artificial grass for roof

 11
6    x   Slats 62 cm long, 0,6 cm thick to fasten roofing paper and/or artificial grass to roof

12      1    x    Plastic funnel with diameter of opening at least 30 cm x ca. 20-30 cm high

Procedure:

Cut 6 holes with diameter of 40-50 mm around the sewer pipe, if possible using a holesaw. The holes should be near the bottom of the pipe at equal distance from the edge of pipe.

When the holes are made, cut the edge of the pipe where the holes are, shortening it about 20 cm. This cuts the bottom of the holes, so that the feed can trickle out of the feed cylinder onto the base plate.

The ring plate is cut out of a piece of plywood. The 12 roof battens with 45° angle are distributed equally around the ring. Put the feed cylinder with holes in the middle of the ring. The battens are screwed onto the ring plate in such a way that on the other end they lie exactly on the circumference of the feed cylinder.
The upper end of the roof battens for the under-construction of the roof is screwed onto the circumference of the pipe at equal distances, ca. 2-3 cm from the upper edge of the cylinder.

The 12 trapezoidal boards are fastened to the roof battens. They fit best when they are held at the narrow end with a circular arc with a diameter of 30 cm, so that they fit closely to the feed cylinder.
So that no rainwater runs along the cylinder onto the base plate, the space between the cylinder and the trapezoidal boards can be filled in with silicone.

So that not too much feed falls from the base plate onto the ground, the 6 slats are fastened to the base plate to prevent this.

For cleaning the base plate, it is useful to have a small "trapdoor," which is made in the base plate on a suitable place. You can fasten a hook and wire above the "trapdoor" to hang a pail under the trapdoor for catching the leftover feed when cleaning. The cleaning is easier when the feeding station is 1.8 to 2 meters about the ground. So that the station can serve its purpose for a long time outdoors, it should be painted with a green exterior paint suitable for withstanding the weather.

An oak beam is well suited for the basis for such a large station, if possible cemented into the ground. The feeding station is fastened to the beam with 3 large metal brackets. A dead tree trunk that has not yet decayed can also serve as the basis, as pictured in our example.

And now, much joy in building the bird feeding station!

Your feathered friends will certainly bring you lots of joy at this feeding station.
